• Vectorization and standardization of technical icons for control panels of industrial equipment (ISO 7010 compliant)

    • Waiting for a performer...
  • Initial situation: there is a set of 48 raster icons (PNG 64-256 px) and 12 photographs of stickers/plates from real equipment (some of the icons are faded, some are distorted by perspective). These images are used in the industrial line HMI (SCADA/HMI on WinCC Unified) and in label printing. Now the style has diverged, the contours “float” when scaled, and some signs do not meet the basic requirements of readability and safety.

Subject area and environment: industrial automation, operator interfaces, safety signs. The resulting vectors should work equally well in HMI (SVG export) and in printing (PDF/EPS), with control over line thicknesses and correct behavior when scaling from 16 px to 300 mm.

Task: to restore, redraw and bring to a single standard a set of vector icons with a unified grid system, optical compensation and clear sources for further support.

    Execution steps:
    1) Analysis of input materials - identify problematic icons that need to be reconstructed from the photo/context, and agree on a common visual language (geometry, radii, stroke thickness, angles, acceptable simplifications for small sizes).
    2) Rendering in vector - 60 icons in the same style, with priority on readability at small sizes and precise geometry. Autotrace without manual modification is not allowed. Some signs will require restoration of their shape using perspective photos.
    3) Library preparation and export - collect files so that they can be painlessly reused in Figma and in the engineering environment (WinCC Unified).

    Technical requirements:
    - Working tool: Adobe Illustrator (preferred) or Affinity Designer. The vector must be clean: a minimum number of control points, without unnecessary masks and effects, without a raster inside.
    - Output formats: AI (sources), SVG (for interface), PDF (for printing), plus one general library file with symbols/components.
    - Grid and dimensions: basic artboard 24x24 px and 48x48 px for HMI, separate artboard 100x100 mm for printing. It is necessary to ensure that the optical weight of the lines matches when scaling.
    - Colors: monochrome (1 color + transparency). Additionally, 2 versions for critical signs: inversion (light on dark) and positive (dark on light). All colors via global swatches.
    - Geometry: uniform fillet radii, limited set of stroke thicknesses (for example, 1.5 and 2.0 in the base mesh), alignment to the pixel grid for the SVG version.
    - Requirement for SVG: correct display in the Chromium browser and in WinCC Unified without contour breaks. Do not use text in SVG.

    Restrictions:
    - You cannot use ready-made third-party icon sets entirely. It is allowed to be guided by ISO 7010/IEC 60417 in meaning, but the drawing must be original and uniform.
    - Icons should be unambiguous without a signature at 16-24 px. If the sign is too complex, a simplification must be proposed and agreed upon.

    Measurable acceptance criteria:
    - 60 pictograms were submitted in 3 formats (AI+SVG+PDF) and collected in a library.
    - Each icon is tested: readability at 16 px and 24 px (visual test on the provided layout), no “jitter” of contours when scaling (there should be no noticeable irregularities/steps due to curves).
    - SVG files open without errors, have a neat structure (logical names of layers/groups), and do not contain embedded raster.
    - The line thickness and radii are the same throughout the entire set (checked by comparing control elements from 5 reference icons).

The customer provides: a folder with source PNGs, photos of stickers, a list of names/meanings of icons and an example of an HMI screen where they are used. The process will require 2 short approval cycles: after 10 reference icons and after 40 icons.
